Dependencies

Addictions are not exclusive to drugs, medication and alcohol. Pathological gambling, excessive use of video games, the Internet or even pornography can also be considered addictions.

What is it?

There is a difference between what is called an addiction and a dependence. Addiction is a behavior that the person repeats and that is fueled by a strong urge to engage in that behavior (e.g. using slot machines).

Addiction maintains behavior despite psychological, social, family and economic consequences. The person suffering from addiction then has no other way to obtain pleasure than to perform the problematic behavior.

What are the main symptoms?

Dependence highlights the neurological reality of addiction. Not only does the person feel the urge to repeat the behavior, but the brain has adapted to this form of gratification and no other source of pleasure can then compete. Addiction is a medical problem that is treated in a psychotherapeutic environment (addiction rehabilitation center, hospitals, psychotherapy in a private office).

People with an addiction will repeat the behavior regularly regardless of the danger it may represent, will devote a lot of time to satisfy their desires and will isolate themselves from those around them as well as neglect their activities.

What are the main causes?

People who suffer from addiction also experience mental health difficulties (anxiety disorders, depression, relationship problems). After a complete assessment, it is sometimes recommended to follow treatment in a specialized center for the treatment of addictions, either in external follow-up (in a group or individually) or in residential follow-up (the person spends a stay in a therapeutic environment).

What psychotherapy interventions?

Psychotherapy in a private practice is relevant when exploring treatment options for someone suffering from addiction. It is also an interesting option for those who are abstinent or who want support to reduce their consumption or problematic behavior.
